Visual Perception: Lightness in a High-Dynamic-Range World
نویسنده
چکیده
How the visual system detects surface reflectance - lightness - has puzzled researchers for centuries. A new study of contexts that capture the characteristic luminance range of natural scenes rules out a long-standing theory of lightness perception.

Computational model of lightness perception in high dynamic range imaging
An anchoring theory of lightness perception by Gilchrist et al. [1999] explains many characteristics of human visual system such as lightness constancy and its spectacular failures which are important in the perception of images. The principal concept of this theory is the perception of complex scenes in terms of groups of consistent areas (frameworks). Such areas, following the gestalt theoris...
متن کاملLightness Perception in Tone Reproduction for High Dynamic Range Images
An anchoring theory of lightness perception comprehensively explains many characteristics of human visual system such as lightness constancy and its spectacular failures which are important in the perception of images. We present a novel approach to tone mapping of high dynamic range (HDR) images which is inspired by the anchoring theory. The key concept of this method is the decomposition of a...
متن کاملA tone mapping operator based on neural and psychophysical models of visual perception
High dynamic range imaging techniques involve capturing and storing real world radiance values that span many orders of magnitude. However, common display devices can usually reproduce intensity ranges only up to two to three orders of magnitude. Therefore, in order to display a high dynamic range image on a low dynamic range screen, the dynamic range of the image needs to be compressed without...
متن کاملThe Dynamic Range of Human Lightness Perception
Natural viewing challenges the visual system with images that have a dynamic range of light intensity (luminance) that can approach 1,000,000:1 and that often exceeds 10,000:1 [1, 2]. The range of perceived surface reflectance (lightness), however, can be well approximated by the Munsell matte neutral scale (N 2.0/ to N 9.5/), consisting of surfaces whose reflectance varies by about 30:1. Thus,...
متن کاملScaling Lightness Perception and Differences Above and Below Diffuse White
The first purpose of this thesis was to design and complete psychophysical experiments for scaling lightness and lightness differences for achromatic percepts above and below the lightness of diffuse white (L*=100). Below diffuse white experiments were conducted under reference conditions recommended by CIE for color difference research. Overall a range of CIELAB lightness values from 7 to 183 ...
